NIGERIAN NATIONAL SYSTEM OF CANCER REGISTRIES

In 2009, the Nigerian Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), Society of Oncology and Cancer Research of Nigeria (SOCRON) and the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) conceptualized the Nigerian National System of Cancer Registries (NSCR). Since inception, NSCR has been able to revive national consciousness in cancer registration, successfully setting up cancer registries across the country and in some cases has revived defunct ones.
The main objectives of NSCR are:
- Providing training, capacity development, mentoring, technical and scientific supports to cancer registries in Nigeria so that they can attain population based cancer registration status and generate high quality cancer incidence, treatment and survival data for the country
- Analyzing of cancer registration data to provide data from Nigerian cancer registries on the most common cancers, cancer incidence and cancer mortality statistics
- Developing policy guidelines on cancer registration and epidemiology in Nigeria
- Advising the government on cancer registration and epidemiology in Nigeria
- Liaising with the Nigerian FMOH and international partners to improve cancer registration in Nigeria.
NSCR plays a supervisory role over all cancer registries in Nigeria and works to strengthen existing cancer registries through the provision of training, mentoring, computer hardware and software, and also provides support for data management and analysis. NSCR advocates for establishment of cancer registration in institutions where they are currently not present, and gives necessary support for upgrading of the Hospital-Based cancer registries to Population-Based cancer registries.
